Aardvark Jazz Orchestra CD, Passages (2016) Leo Records

Released April 2016

Passages (Leo Records)

The Aardvark Jazz Orchestra continued its 43rd season on MIT’s mainstage, Kresge Auditorium, with a concert showcasing the North American release of the band’s 14th CD, Passages (Leo Records), featuring compositions by Aardvark music director Mark Harvey.  The CD has already garnered rave reviews in Europe:

Fresh….unconventional….Aardvark Jazz Orchestra proves once more its reputation as one of the best jazz ensembles in the world.  - Jazz Podium, Germany

Highly imaginative and varied music which is marvelously suggestive of its themes….The Aardvark Jazz Orchestra play beautifully all the way through the album.  It speaks an extraordinary dialectic, harmonious though bizarrely ruminating.  Exceptional music indeed.  - Jazz Views (UK)

In the April 2016 show, Aardvark performed the centerpiece of the new CD, Commemoration (Boston 2013), a tribute to the victims and survivors of the Boston Marathon tragedy.  In addition, Harvey presented Dreaming (2014) and No Walls (2004), and premieres of his latest works Fluctuations and By the Way.

Aardvark by the Book
Aardvark has received a highly complimentary mention in a brand-new book by composer/educator Graham Collier entitled the jazz composer: moving music off the paper (London: Northway Publications, 2009), p. 124.

Discussing a quartet of international ensembles, including Aardvark, and comparing these with some of the recognized names in today's big band music, Collier writes...

Their [Aardvark, et al.]  music demonstrates a different language, a much more contemporary language, a much more individual language….they also recognize that something very important happened fifty or so years ago, and in their music one hears new ideas and sounds, and a recognition that the avant-garde exists.   All facets that serve to make their compositions fresh and exciting.  In a word --interesting.  Like Duke.

And a second mention is made in the new edition of the highly regarded European publication by Joachim-Ernst Berendt and Gunther Huesmann, The Jazz Book: From Ragtime to the 21st Century, trans. H. and B. Bredigkeit, Dan Morgenstern, Tim Nevill, and Jeb Bishop, 7th ed. (Chicago: Lawrence Hill books, 2009), 607.  Used with permission of Lawrence Hill Books.

The Aardvark Jazz Orchestra (led by American trumpeter Mark Harvey) has brought the "crazy" stylistic attacks of postmodern jazz into free improvised music in intelligent encounters with, among others, Jaki Byard, Sheila Jordan, and Jimmy Giuffre.
