Trumpet Madness (2005)

Trumpet Madness, Aardvark Jazz Orchestra

Trumpet Madness features several wonderful trumpeters, as well as the entire Aardvark Orchestra in both solo and collective improvisational roles. Among the trumpeters are music director Mark Harvey, soloing on Taylor Ho Bynum's Concerto for Orchestra and Improviser, Berlin-based trumpeter Rajesh Mehta, featured on Harvey's Spirals which was written especially for Mehta and his percussion collaborator Paul Lovens, and trumpeters Harvey, Ho Bynum, Mehta, Greg Kelley, and Jeanne Snodgrass on the title tune Trumpet Madness, an improvisational tour de force. K.C. Dunbar, Jimmy Leach, and Eric Dahlman round out our trumpetistic panorama as they are heard to advantage on several other tracks on the recording.

Aardvark  kicked off its historic 40th Season in grand style to a full house at Scullers...

Aardvark Jazz Orchestra turns 40

The Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, one of the longest running large jazz ensembles in North America, opened its 40th season at Scullers on October 3rd with an exhilarating show spanning the Aardvark spectrum, from originals by director Mark Harvey to music from the Basie, Ellington, and Woody Herman bands.

The show celebrated the release of Aardvark's 11th CD, Evocations, on Leo Records (UK), one of the world's leading adventurous music labels.  Selections from the new disc (“spirited composition and inspired playing” - Jazz Alchemist, Poland) included Mark Harvey's Rascals and Scoundrels.

Aardvark vocalists Jerry Edwards and Grace Hughes were spotlighted in Basie's Every Day I Have the Blues and Ellington’s Tell Me It's the Truth.

Also on tap:  Harvey's Cantata Tubulidentata (The Song of the Aardvarks, honoring the band's 40-year mark) and the lush Early Autumn by Newton native Ralph Burns, a late-1940s hit for Woody Herman.

Other highlights of the 2012-2103 season include Aardvark’s 40th Annual Christmas Concert at Emmanuel Church Boston on December 15, and the world premiere of Harvey’'s Boston JazzScape (10 years in the making) at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts on March 8.
